When asked to write some background on John Dick & Son it seems only right that we let you know where we started – and how far we have come. After all we have been in business for over 60 years.
Starting life as antique dealers, John Dick & Son was founded in 1954 by my father John Dick, who set up the business dealing antiques to trade customers. Sourcing antiques from all over the country, they were brought back to our current location to sell from a 17th century grain barn on my father’s premises. Attracting buyers from all over the world, the barn was known as Dick’s Barn and really has stood the test of time – as it’s now our Sofa Barn.
Through his work my father met my mother who also worked in the trade in Preston, selling antiques and new furniture. Combining their contacts they introduced new furniture and interior accessories into the Dicks Barn mix and in the late 1970’s decided to focus entirely on selling new – stopping the antique offering, expanding into a second spacious showroom (now our main showroom) and changing the name of the business to John Dick & Son.
I was born into the business and grew up immersed in all things ‘furniture’, working initially on a whole host of jobs – driving our delivery vans, moving and delivering furniture and learning the ropes before taking over the reins as Director in 1995. My wife Sally, an interior designer, joined the company in 1999 and we launched an interior design arm of the business. In addition we also created The Sofa Barn in the old Dicks Barn to offer a varied range of furniture at great prices, catering for all budgets.
Fast forward to 2018 and although we’ve evolved and had changes on the way we have stayed true to our roots. My parents are both still involved in the business whilst enjoying their retirement and we’re proud to be able to say that our current team has been with us for years – from our delivery drivers to our shop floor staff and interior designers.
We really are a family company and its testament to our heritage that we’ve stood the test of time in the furniture business, expanding and moving forward from strength to strength.
We’re looking forward to the next 60 years and hope that our current customers will continue to support us and enjoy what we offer – we really do appreciate and value your custom. If you’re new to John Dick & Son please pop in and browse around our showrooms – we hope to see you soon!
