22 December 2013
We learnt an interesting fact the other day; we are among only 2% of businesses in the UK that are 4th generation family businesses. We’re also proud to have been trading from our location since 1954 and we’re even more proud of the fact that 2013 has been our busiest year to date.
Thanks to our loyal customers we are completing our best year of trading ever and have achieved it during one of our busiest years. We thought we’d share some of the highlights with you.
The biggest ever buying season
January is always a busy period when we visit the manufacturers and furniture trade shows to buy stock and to see the latest trends from all over Europe. This year was no different with much of it spent on the road ordering for the 2013 season. This year, we bought more new stock than usual for one simple reason – we decided to completely refurbish our main showroom.
The biggest ever refurbishment
Much of the early part of the year was spent planning the refurbishment and making sure every detail was planned and scheduled – something we’re used to doing for clients but it is somewhat different when you need to move an entire showroom of upholstery to make way for carpet fitters and decorators. Not to mention the dining tables, occasional tables, beds, sideboards, cabinets, lamps and accessories that also had to be temporarily moved.
The biggest ever weekend
The culmination of this was the special weekend we hosted in September to welcome our customers to the new showroom and we were delighted that 700+ people managed to visit us during the three days.
The biggest ever choice
But, it wasn’t just the main showroom that got a complete make over; we also opened our new Fama showroom to showcase this extraordinary range from Spain – something that has proven to be very popular with many of you.
So, we now have a dedicated showroom for what we think is the finest furniture from Spain next door to our dedicated John Sankey showroom offering what we believe is the best range from a UK manufacturer.
The biggest variety of design projects
Our interior designers have also been extremely busy with more major residential design projects than ever before and not all of them here in Scotland. Successful projects from properties in Southern Ireland and Barcelona, Spain have meant they’ve been travelling around a great deal.
The biggest award
You may recall we brought you news about Dame Helen Mirren’s play in London, The Audience. John Dick & son provided two Kittoch chairs which were the centrepiece of the stage set and we were delighted to hear that Dame Helen Mirren went on to win an Olivier Award for her portrayal of HRH The Queen.
The biggest fuel bill
It seems every part of the business has had its biggest year including our delivery and installation team who have covered more miles and delivered more orders in 2013 than ever before. All of them will surely welcome a well earned break for a short time over the Christmas period.
The biggest party
We also had a very special occasion on Friday 20th December, John Dick celebrated his 80th birthday; he most probably took a moment to reflect on 60+ years in the furniture business, he is extremely heartened to see how successful the business has been in 2013. We wish him a very happy birthday and look forward to celebrating 60 years at the current location during 2014.
Our final thanks have to go to all of you who have supported us over the years and in particular during 2013. Recent trading conditions have been tough for all retailers so we are especially grateful for the loyalty and support you have shown our family business.
We wish each and every one of you a happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year, we’re certainly look forward to doing it all again in 2014.
